Hysterectomy Q & A

What gynecological conditions does a hysterectomy treat?

A hysterectomy, the surgical removal of part or all of your uterus, is often the best treatment if you have cervical, uterine, or ovarian cancer. It may also be the first line of treatment if you have a uterine hemorrhage.

When you have a gynecological condition that’s not cancerous, your doctor only considers a hysterectomy after you’ve tried other conservative treatments.

Conditions that may require a hysterectomy include:

  • Uterine fibroids: Noncancerous growths in the wall of your uterus
  • Endometriosis: Tissue that usually lines the inside of your uterus grows outside the uterus
  • Uterine prolapse: Muscles holding the uterus in place weaken, allowing it to drop
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding: Irregular and heavy bleeding
  • Adenomyosis: Abnormal tissue growth inside the uterine wall

What are the different types of hysterectomies?

Dr. Alizade may perform one of three different types of hysterectomies, depending on which is best for your condition:

  • Total hysterectomy: The entire uterus is removed, including your cervix
  • Partial hysterectomy: Upper part of the uterus is removed; your cervix stays intact
  • Radical hysterectomy: Entire uterus, cervix, and upper part of the vagina are removed

During any hysterectomy, Dr. Alizade may also remove one or both ovaries and fallopian tubes.

What are the benefits of da Vinci robotic-assisted hysterectomy?

Dr. Alizade specializes in robotic-assisted hysterectomy using the da Vinci surgery system. This is a minimally-invasive method, which means Dr. Alizade performs it using a laparoscope and a few small incisions.

The laparoscope, which Dr. Alizade inserts through one incision, contains a tiny camera and transmits a high-definition, 3D view of the surgical area. Specialized surgical tools in narrow tubes are inserted through other incisions and used to remove the uterus.

The robotic laparoscope and tools are connected to highly-sensitive controllers that Dr. Alizade manipulates. The innovative technology of the da Vinci system translates the doctor’s hand motions into movements that bend and rotate better than the human wrist and are more precise than human hands.

The robotic arms can also fit into small, confined spaces where they perform surgery without damaging surrounding tissues. Further health benefits from laparoscopic surgery include:

  • Less postoperative pain
  • Quicker healing
  • Less blood loss
  • Minimal scarring
